[Solved] "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available" error on non rooted Android device

Yesterday when I was updating my new Galaxy S4 I faced a really weird issue. I started getting an error "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available" whenever I tried updating the device.

I know that I have this bad habit of tinkering with all the devices I get my hands on which made me wonder if I had rooted the wrong android device yesterday night during my random research :-o. I then checked my other device which was a Android S3 and noticed that it was rooted which kind of assured me that I did nothing that could cause this error on the S4. Googling this error showed me "N" number of pages mentioning that this error means I had goofed up the kernel and I can no longer update my phone and its warranty stands VOID.  (yea.. a serious WTF moment). Not that I care about  the stupid warranty, but I had resisted messing around with the device for 4 days already just to be sure that I had used it properly before it dies :D

 Then, after reading 100+ random posts and spending some hours trying to figure out what could have possibly gone wrong, I came across this post. The reply on the thread by "vferrari" solved the problem for me with a little tweak.
Below are the steps I had to do to get the phone back to a condition where OTA updates are again functional:
  1. Un-mounted the inserted SD card.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. Go to Android recovery mode by pressing the Power + Volume down button.
  4. Select the "Wipe cache partition".
  5. Restart the device after successful wipe.
  6. Continue the normal steps for OTA android update.
After the above steps, I was able to successfully solve the problem and update my device. I re-inserted the SDcard, but did not face the error again.

      If the sim is unlocked using a software tweak that this process would not help. If not, then it should work.

      Yes it did. But you have to press the volume up + the select button at the bottom of the screen and the power volume to power the phone up in recovery mode.

    I tried this and doing power and volume down goes into odin mode and wants to download new custom os. Even when I do power and volume up into recovery mode and select wipe cache it sisnt solve the problem.

      These steps did work for me on mine and a bunch of other guys. Make sure you follow all the steps properly and don't hesistate to restart your phone in case you feel you have done your bit but still it does not work.

    I tried to Go to Android recovery mode by pressing the Power + Volume down button. But it just keep restarting again. It doesn't go to Android Recovery mode everytime I press the Power + Volume button down.

      for samsung (mine is note 2), it can be done by pressing volume up+home+power button & you keep holding until the galaxy note words comes up then u release..

      i tried using volume down & power as instructed here but couldnt work too..

    I had the same problem on my Galaxy Note II, but it was resolved just by doing this.

    - Switched Off. Removed the SD card and started the device.
    - Restarted it again without the SD card. Checked "Software Update" feature, it was checking for the updates without any issues.
    - Switched Off, inserted SD card, Switched ON. I was able to check for the updates without any issues.

      I tried all methods, Nothing worked until I tried yours. For some reason just unmounting sd card still wont work. You do indeed need to physically take it out then it updated for me no problem. Thank you very much for your help, Was driving me crazy.

    One more thing for rooted people or people who have flash custom rom. There is a tool called Triangle Away. It resets the counter and can suppress root for a couple of minute for you to do the OTA.
    It works well (just tried)

    switch off your phone.press the volume up button + menu button + power button simultaneously,and HOLD it until the Samsung logo appear. then,follow the rest of the steps. good luck! :)

    For those who have rooted device and removing sd card didn't work here is how i made my device official.
    1. download voodoo ota rootkeeper from playstore.
    2. open the program and hide root status.
    3. restart
    4 try software update.
    NOTE: It worked for me and i hope it will work for u guys too.

    i tried fixing this problem for 3 days tried everything possible found on the internet till i finally figures it out this is what you need to do
    step1 watch this video and follow all the steps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttlS9MlG30I

    step2 reboot device

    step 3 power off and while off hold volume down + home button +power button when samsung logo appers release power button only it will then take to a menu select wipe data partition the go to te factory reset option and reset it
    step 4 have samsung kies installed and ready

    step 5 while your phone is rebooting after you did the factory reset connect it to your pc using usb cord and samsung kies should read your device now and start the firmware update

    The only trick is for my S4 I had to use the 3-button method to get into recovery. But once there, it worked like a charm. Thanks for posting this!

      And for those who may have missed it, the 3-button method is to hold Volume Up + The center select button at the bottom of the screen (aka home button) + Power button.

    I have tried "rooting" my phone, but ended up not wanting it anymore, therefore, I have "unrooted" it. After then, I go on my phone and check updates, it says "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available" and when it says at the bottom "status" it says Custom.

    My question is, How do I return everything to normal, and that I won't be getting anymore messaging and that the phone would be as good as new as it came out of the box?

    My iphone was working properly but from two days what happened to my iphone I didn’t find, whenever I try to transfer files then I won’t and receive iphone error. I have tried manual steps to fix this error but unable to solve fix this error. But at last I have fixed iphone error by using third party repair tool and now my iphone file transfer easily. Thanks.

    I have S4 I9500, and when I try to clear the Cache by shutting down the phone and restarting while holding the Power, Vol up, and the home buttons, I do end up on the recovery screen that allows me to select "wipe Cache partition", however once I select it, I briefly get "erasing", and then "error" and the phone boots up to home screen. Anyone else have the same issue? or know what the fix is??

    All these steps didn't work in my note 3 so i used samsung kies on my pc. And then it finally updated from 4.3 to 4.4.2. And now my phones status changed from custom to official.

    It doesn't work in my S3 mini....starting from this "Go to Android recovery mode by pressing the Power + Volume down button". ...I've tried a lot of times,but to no avail,.it will just start up and not proceed according to the plan/instruction. please help.

    Hi. I have a samsung note 2. And last week i went to a technician since my phone wont boot and was stuck on the samsung logo. He said it was missing a folder and so he fixed it. when i got hold of my phone again i wanted to install a certain app but it says 'Your device has been modified and cant update' something like that. What does this mean? is this because of the fixing? Will power + volume down work? Im afraid to mess with my phone once again.
